Career Overview

Tony Marino is an American pianist, composer, and recording engineer whose work spans jazz, Latin jazz, tango, funk, world music, and rock. Once described as “the quintessential Latin jazz keyboardist,” Marino has built a remarkable legacy of originality and innovation.

With more than two decades of recordings and 23 albums of original compositions, his music blends deep technical mastery with emotional storytelling — establishing him as one of the most versatile voices in modern instrumental music.

Early Years

Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Tony Marino’s passion for music began at age seven after hearing Look Inside the Asylum Choir by Leon Russell and Marc Benno. The piano soon became his lifelong companion. By his teenage years, Marino was studying under Bill DelGovenatore, who introduced him to jazz greats such as Thelonious Monk and Oscar Peterson.

While working at Sam D’Amico Music, Marino met professional musicians like guitarist Frank DiBussolo and bassist Al Stauffer, who expanded his musical horizons. He also studied with acclaimed Philadelphia pianist Tom Lawton and received mentorship from Ernest “Hoppy” Hopkins — formative experiences that shaped his path as a jazz artist and composer.

Professional Work & Early Bands

In 1975, while still in high school, Marino joined Idea ’71, a popular Italian-American band in the Philadelphia and Tri-State area. Between 1975 and 1982, the group recorded projects including Supersano at Virtue Recording Studios and a single on Medley Records (Sweet Hometown / We Were Happy) at Alpha International Studios.

After moving to Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1995, Marino founded Tony Marino and Havana Heat, a Latin jazz ensemble that became known for its rhythmic energy and engaging performances.

The group’s debut, The Latin Jazz Project (1997), followed by Note for Note that same year, marked the start of Marino’s prolific recording career. The band later evolved into Latin Jazz Sounds, reflecting its broader musical scope.

Tony Marino | Expanding His Sound

During the early 2000s, Marino refined his sound through albums such as Samba De Say Party (2001), The Latin Jazz Project Songbook (2002), Broad Street (2003), 5 (2004), and It’s Not That Complicated (2006). Distributed worldwide through Jamey Aebersold, these albums established him as a respected voice in contemporary jazz and world music.

Marino further developed his style by studying Brazilian jazz with Breno Sauer, Afro-Cuban piano with José Valdez, and advanced harmony and improvisation techniques with Laurence Hobgood and Mark Soskin.

Recognition and Resilience

From 2016 through 2021, Marino released a string of acclaimed projects — 101, A Sound Inve$tment, Thank You for the Music, Tango Silhouette, Family and Friends, Qué Pasa, Swing Your Thing, and Rhythm and Dues — earning several Global Music Awards for excellence in jazz composition and performance.

In 2023, following a serious hand injury, Marino faced one of his greatest challenges. Determined to recover, he adopted the Taubman piano technique to rebuild strength and control. His perseverance led to the 2024 release of Friday Night, a powerful statement of creativity and resilience that reignited his recording career.

New Directions (2024–2025)

True to his exploratory nature, Marino entered a new artistic phase with Tango Improvisations (2024), The Rock Album (2025), and The Funk Album (2025). These projects showcased his ability to evolve while staying rooted in his signature sound — blending jazz harmony, global rhythm, and emotional depth.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Tony Marino shows no sign of slowing down. In early 2026, he is set to release a brand-new album that continues his journey of musical exploration and reinvention.

He has also teamed up as co-writer and creative collaborator with K Marino, working together as the driving force behind the music and storytelling of Eggmen Road — a project that combines sharp humor, original songwriting, and inventive soundscapes.

Through this collaboration and his ever-growing solo catalog, Tony Marino continues to expand his artistic universe — proving that passion, persistence, and creativity never fade.
